Super Mario 3D All-Stars Review

In the early ’90s, Nintendo remastered the original Super Mario games and named the Collection Super Mario All-Stars. Nintendo has introduced the All-Stars brand, this time switching to 3D. While the original Super Mario All-Stars remastered their games, this new 3D collection may best set out as “Port Plus” thanks to the emulation. In this case, the three games included in the package, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, have enhanced the emulated versions of the original games with a Little extra content or technical improvements. Read this Super Mario 3D All-Stars Review.

Starting with Super Mario 64, the game works well at 720p in base and Handheld Mode. The game also has a 4:3 aspect ratio to the original and is limited to 30 frames per second. Different acronyms aside, this is a base port, but it has adjusted the textures and ignored the input delay we saw with the Wii U version. Simply put, it plays as it should, and that’s the critical point here. Given the impact of Super Mario 64 as a game, I’m thrilled that it has not been confused with functionality.

Super Mario Sunshine

As we move on to Super Mario Sunshine, although mysteriously still limited to 30 frames per second, it will render at least 1080p (flat), increase the aspect ratio to 16: 9 and work harder with the various elements of HUD and pre-reproduction Movies.

Given the technical details of the original GameCube version, it’s fair to say that more work has been done on sunshine than on the other games in the collection, but that does not say much. Since this is Sunshine’s first real port, it’s well done, but again, the lack of 60 frames per second seems strange.

Then we come to Super Mario Galaxy, possibly the best game. The game looks and plays well with silky smooth 60 FPS and 1080p (anchored). With a functional disclaimer, restoring Wii controls was not easy. While Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine work well on a Switch Pro platform. It took time to get used to the Super Mario Galaxy. Part of this is due to my muscle memory because I unlocked all 121 stars on the Wii version, and the switch does not have the same infrared emission field on the TV.

Super Mario Sunshine is Excellent in this Collection

In addition to the motion controls that Joy-Cons handles very well, much of the game has also used the Pointer to the Wii Remote. It is not configured with the switch hardware. There is a trade-off where one of the side buttons centers the Pointer. It’s a choppy solution. Still, it works, and the different mapping of the pillow’s gyro controls was also a good option.

Some have also commented that this collection is missing in Super Mario Galaxy 2. But I agree because I always think the first game was much better. The most irritating thing about this collection is that after remakes like Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Nintendo could have done a lot more regarding technical improvements for each of the included games.

Although it is a solid collection, each of these games is extremely well designed and enormously influential. This star collection sometimes feels a bit fancy and relatively simple, especially since apart from the three games, you only get their soundtrack and nothing but extra.

It could have been an incredible collection of classic Super Mario games. That told how the series switched to 3D and what functional solutions are required to work. Instead, it feels like a missed opportunity, and while the respective games are fun, the overall collection seems technically flawed.

Hopefully, Nintendo can patch the collection to run all games at 60 FPS and 1080p, but I’m not holding my breath. It is the collection you should choose if you missed previous collections. But if you loved these games as a child and expected Nintendo to do everything to give them the technical upgrade they deserve, you’ll be a little disappointed.
